1ST LIEUTENANT 6-6

DEREK MEHU

Hello , my name is Derek Mehu. I have been a member of the company for about 13 years. I currently hold the position of 2nd Lt. My position requires me to prepare probationary firefighters to be cognizant with the tools, tactics , and procedures that our company utilizes to mitigate emergency situations. My current occupation is being a firefighter for the city of New York . I have a degree in Fire protection technology from SUNY Rockland . At 18, I received my NYS EMT certification, and subsequently joined the FDNY as an EMT. At 21 , I qualified as a Chauffeur for all the apparatus our company employs. Training never ceases, so we are constantly learning and recertifying to be the best we can at our craft. Throughout the years , I have joined many associations including Rcvfa and FASNY. My ambition for joining the firehouse started at a young age. I was intrigued with the way firefighters operated. Working with other firefighters is a team oriented task , similar to how sports teams or the military work together to accomplish a goal. The work can be very physically demanding , but the reward of a job well done and everyone going home safe is what the job is all about . You become a family , and learn a lot of things in life you may not have picked up elsewhere , which is why Joining was one of the best decisions of my life .
