When responding to a carbon monoxide alarm activation, the member with the
meter should take an initial reading at the front door of the premises, then
continue inside to locate the source. In residential homes, heating and
cooking appliances and vehicles running in a garage are common sources.
Another possible source that is often overlooked is carbon monoxide being
forced back into the house due to a downdraft (reverse stacking) of flue gases
from the chimney. Lastly, if the source of the carbon monoxide is not found
inside the premises, the origin may be in an attached exposure or from
somewhere outside of the building.
