When responding to a natural gas emergency, it is often necessary to shut the gas supply to an appliance or in some cases to the house supply at the meter. Most residential gas shut offs are the 1/4 turn type and can be shut off using either the fork of the halligan, a vice grip, or pliers.  When the valve is parallel to the piping, the valve is in the open position. When the valve is perpendicular to the piping, the valve is in the closed position.
