Once a hose line is put into operation at a structure fire, a second line should also be ordered. This second hose line can be used as a back-up to the first in case of a water loss (burst length etc). The second line may also be used simultaneously with the first line if fire conditions dictate. Lastly, if not needed in either of these cases, the second line could be stretched to the floor above or another area as needed. Remember, all members should listen for communications concerning hose line placement and operations while at a fire. This information could possibly tip you off about opposing hose lines, and if searching remote from the hose line, the need to seek refuge.
